Rise Against

Overview

Rise Against is an American punk rock band from Chicago. The group’s current line-up comprises vocalist/rhythm guitarist Tim McIlrath, lead guitarist Zach Blair, bassist Joe Principe and drummer Brandon Barnes. The band was formed in 1999, and signed a recording contract with the independent record label Fat Wreck Chords the following year. In 2004 the band switched to Geffen Records and made their major record label debut with Siren Song of the Counter Culture. With the release of Appeal to Reason (2008), Rise Against’s music shifted toward a more accessible and radio-friendly sound, with greater emphasis on production value. The album’s third single, “Savior”, broke the record for the most consecutive weeks spent on both the Hot Rock Songs and Modern Rock Tracks charts. Their next five albums all charted in the top ten of the Billboard 200.

Musical Style

Rooted in hardcore punk and melodic hardcore, Rise Against’s music emphasizes melody, catchy hooks, aggression in both their sound and playing, and rapid tempos. Lyrically, the band is known for their outspoken social commentary, covering a wide range of topics such as animal rights, economic injustice, environmental disasters, forced displacement,  modern warfare, and political corruption.

The Beatles

Overview

The Beatles were an English rock band formed in Liverpool in 1960. With a line-up comprising John Lennon, Paul McCartney, George Harrison and Ringo Starr, they are regarded as the most influential band of all time. Led by the band’s primary songwriters, Lennon and McCartney, the Beatles built their reputation playing clubs in Liverpool and Hamburg over a three-year period from 1960. The Beatles were international stars by early 1964, leading the “British Invasion” of the United States pop market and breaking numerous sales records. After the group’s break-up in 1970, all four members enjoyed success as solo artists. The Beatles are the best-selling band in history, with estimated sales of over 800 million albums worldwide. The group were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1988, and all four main members were inducted individually between 1994 and 2015. As of 2019, the Beatles hold the record for most number-one hits on the Hot 100 chart with twenty. The band have received seven Grammy Awards, an Academy Award (for Best Original Song Score for the 1970 film Let It Be) and fifteen Ivor Novello Awards.

Musical Style

The group were integral to the evolution of pop music into an art form and to the development of the counterculture of the 1960s. Their sound, rooted in skiffle, beat and 1950s rock and roll, incorporated elements of classical music and traditional pop in innovative ways. They also pioneered recording techniques and explored music styles ranging from ballads to psychedelia and hard rock. As they continued to draw influences from a variety of cultural sources, their musical and lyrical sophistication grew, and they came to be seen as embodying the era’s socio-cultural movements.

Maroon 5

Overview

Maroon 5 is an American pop rock band from Los Angeles, California. It currently consists of lead vocalist Adam Levine, keyboardist and rhythm guitarist Jesse Carmichael, bassist Mickey Madden, lead guitarist James Valentine, drummer Matt Flynn, keyboardist PJ Morton, and multi-instrumentalist Sam Farrar. The band started out as Kara’s Flowers in 1994, while they were still in high school. After self-releasing their independent album We Like Digging?, the band signed to Reprise Records and released the album The Fourth World in 1997. The album garnered a tepid response, after which the record label dropped the band and the members focused on college. In 2001, the band re-emerged as Maroon 5, pursuing a different direction and adding guitarist Valentine. The band signed with Octone Records, and released many songs that were at the top of the charts with one album going platinum.In 2014, the band signed a new label, Interscope Records. Maroon 5 has sold more than 120 million records, making them one of the world’s best-selling music artists. Maroon 5 have been the recipients of three Grammy Awards, three American Music Awards, and three People’s Choice Awards, with five Teen Choice Awards, and eight Billboard Music Awards. In 2004 World Music Awards, it won the award for “World’s Best New Group”.

Musical Style

Maroon 5’s musical style has generally been regarded as pop, pop rock, funk rock, dance-pop, R&B, and soft rock. The band’s songs tend to be very guitar-heavy, often accompanied by piano or synthesizer. The theme in most of their songs is love, frequently lost love. “Makes Me Wonder” in particular has a secondary theme, in which Levine expresses his frustration with the state of American politics and the Iraq War.
